HDCP 2.2 to 1.4 Converter

HDCP 2.2 is latest evolution of content protection. In other words, it’s the magic part of the HDMI signal that keeps people from copying DVDs, BluRays, streaming video, and other protected content. The good news is this allows Hollywood to capitalize on all their hard earned work. The bad news is you are going to have to purchase your own copy of Dances with Wolves. The even worse news is there are several versions of HDCP, and not all versions are compatible with each other.

So what does this mean? This means that a BluRay player that supports HDCP version 1.4 won’t be compatible with a TV that supports HDCP version 2.2. And HDCP is limited to just TV’s and BluRay…any device which connects via an HDMI cable supports and relies on a version of HDCP.

So what do I do? You purchase an TL-C-HDCP converter and place it inline between your incompatible source and destination devices.

The TL-C-HDCP was developed to convert the latest version of HDCP (2.2) to one of the most common versions of HDCP (1.4), in essence allowing brand new equipment to be integrated into an existing audio-visual system.

    2. Connect the TL-C-HDCP to your destination device using an HDMI cable.
    3. Connect the power supply (included in the package) to an AC outlet or power source
  • What comes in the package?
Each TL-C-HDCP includes one converter and one power supply.

What’s the max length of HDMI cable that I can connect to the converter?
It really depends on the cable type and quality. Typically, we recommend using a twisted pair or fiber optic extender set for cable runs longer than 50 feet.

Do I need to power the unit?
Yes, the TL-C-HDCP requires power and ships with a power supply.

How do I tell which version of HDCP my devices are?
Check the manufacturer’s specifications. You can typically get this information by searching by the make and model online.

What if my devices support a version of HDCP other than 1.4 or 2.2?
They probably are compatible. Most versions of HDCP are compatible and the devices will communicate with each other. The main issue is with HDCP 2.2, it’s unfortunately not backwards compatible with earlier versions of HDCP.

Why isn’t it HDCP 2.2 compatible with earlier versions?
HDCP 2.2 uses an encryption system that’s much, much stronger than previous versions. New protection features include sync requirements that will time out the system after 20ms. Unfortunately, older versions of HDCP don’t meet the sync requirements and are therefore incompatible.

Can I update devices with older versions of HDCP to be compatible? Maybe through a firmware upgrade?
Unfortunately not. Firmware is a software thing. HDCP is a hardware thing. The good news is the TL-C-HDCP is a pretty good solution!
